Yugoslavia participated in the Contest 27 times, debuting in 1961 and competing every year until its last appearance in 1992, with the exceptions of 1977 to 1980 and 1985.
Ljiljana Petrović was the country's first entrant and placed eighth. The following year, Lola Novaković gave the country its first top five result, finishing fourth. This would remain the country's only top five result until 1983, when Danijel finished in 4th place with the song "Džuli". Novi Fosili also finished in the same position in 1987 with "Ja sam za ples". Two years later in Lausanne, the country achieved its only victory when Riva won with the song "Rock Me" and hosted the following year's Contest in Zagreb.
Since the country's dissolution in 1992, that year saw the nation enter as FR Yugoslavia and since then independent nations Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia have all participated in the Contest.
