Spain has participated in the Contest 61 times since making its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest 1961 , where they finished ninth. They have competed continuously since their debut, being bettered only by the United Kingdom who debuted four years before them on home soil.
Since 2004, the country has been one of the "Big Five", along with France , Germany and the United Kingdom (with Italy joining them in 2011 ) who are automatically allowed to participate in the final because they are the five biggest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union.
The country has won twice: in 1968 and again the following year in the Contest's only four-way tie with the United Kingdom , The Netherlands and France . It has finished in last place with Nul Points three times.
The country made its debut at the inuagural Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, finishing as runner-up to Croatia . The following year, it secured its first and only win before finishing as runner-up to Belarus for the second time following that.
Following another Top 5 finish, the country withdrew from competing but in 2019 they announced that they would return after a twelve year absence. This resulted in yet another Top 3 finish.
