San Marino has participated in the Contest 13 times since its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade with the group Miodio and their song "Complice", which failed to qualify for the final, finishing in last place. Since the withdrawal of Monaco from participating, it is the only microstate participating in the Contest.
After a two year absence, the microstate returned for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with representative Senit performing the song "Stand By", which again failed to qualify for the final - a trend which continued until 2014 Contest representative Valentina Monetta (who had previously represented the microstate at the previous two Contests) finally broke their run by qualifying for the final with her song "Maybe", finishing in 24th place with 14 points. They have successfully qualified from the semi-finals a further two times - in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
The microstate made its debut at the 2013 Contest in Kiev, which also gave it its best result, finishing in 10th place. It competed a further two times with its worst result of 15th place coming the following year. It made its last appearance at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015, finishing in 14th place before announcing its withdrawal from competing.
