Salvador Sobral is a Portuguese jazz singer who came to national attention through his participation in the third season of Ídolos, the Portuguese syndication of the Idol franchise. He finished in seventh place overall. His sister, Luísa, competed on the same show six years earlier and finished in third place. He released his debut solo album in August 2016.

He won the right to represent his home country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev with the song "Amar pelos dois", which was written by his sister. The song went on to win the Contest with the highest score under the current voting system, giving the country its first-ever win after 53 years of participation.
