Russia has participated in the Contest 23 times since its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 in Dublin with the song "Vyečhniy stranik" by Youddiph, which gave them their first Top 10 finish. They did not participate the 1998 Contest in Birmingham and the 1999 Contest in Jerusalem.
The country was the most successful between 2000 and 2009 with one win at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade with the song "Believe" by Dima Bilan, two runner-up and two third place finishes. During the 2010s they have achieved a further two runner-up finishes and one third place finish.
They have missed two Contests - in 2017 when their entrant Julia Samoylova was forced to withdraw after she performed in Crimea and upon her return the following year she failed to qualify for the final, thus breaking the country's 100% qualification record. In 2022 following their invasion of Ukraine, the EBU announced that they would be banned from competing at that year's Contest and it was later announced that they would be banned from competing in future Contests until their membership was re-instated.
The country made its debut at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Hasselt, finishing in 9th place. It has competed a further 13 times, including winning twice at the 2016 and Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 respectively. It was also the first country to have the same artist represent it twice in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, doing so in 2009 and 2011. As with the adult Contest, from 2022 onwards the country has been banned from competing in future Contests due to the country's invasion of Ukraine until the EBU re-instates their membership.
