Monaco participated in the Contest 24 times since its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 1959 with the song "Mon ami Pierrot" by Jacques Pills, which finished in last place with a single point.
It had a string of non-consecutive Top 10 finishes until it secured its only victory at the Eurovision Song Contest 1971 in Dublin with the song "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" by Séverine. However, it turned down the chance to host the Contest the following year due to financial reasons.
It continued to participate in the Contest until it withdrew following the Eurovision Song Contest 1979. It attempted to return for the 2004 Contest in Istanbul, the first year of the semi finals, but following its third consecutive non-qualification it withdrew from competing once more and has not competed since.
