Malta has participated in the Contest 35 times since its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 1971 in Dublin. It is the only non-winning country to achieve four Top 3 results.
It finished last in its first two performance and had a sixteen-year absence from competing from 1975 to 1991. Following its return it finished in the Top 10 in twelve out of fifteen Contests from then until 2005.
Since its third last place finish at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006, the country has fared less well with its only Top 10 finish coming at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 courtesy of Gianluca Bezzina's eighth place result and with the introduction of the semi-finals it has failed nine times to qualify for the final.
It made its debut at the inaugural Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, finishing in 7th place. It has participated a further 13 times, winning in 2013 and 2015, and to date, they have finished in last place three times.
