Germany was one of the Founding Seven nations that competed in the very first Contest in 1956. It has won the contest twice, in 1982 and 2010, and finished in last place seven times, including three times with Nul Points.
Between 1962 and 1990, the nation competed as West Germany due to being divided by the Berlin Wall. The country, along with the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Spain, is one of the "Big Five" countries that are automatically qualified to the final, regardless of the placing. This is due to being the largest financial contributors to the contest and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
