The Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was held in Athens, Greece due to Helena Paparizou winning in Kyiv with 'My Number One'. 37 countries participated and 24 countries got through to the final.

After 45 years of participation, Finland won for the first time with hard rock act Lordi, who performed the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah". It was the first time ever that a song in this genre had won the Contest.
