Azerbaijan has competed 15 times in the Contest since it made its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade and have appeared in every final up to 2017. Three years after its debut, they scored their first ever victory with the song "Running Scared", performed by duo Eli & Nikki. This made them the first mixed gender duo to win the Contest since 1963.
They reached the Top 5 in five consecutive contests, from 2009 to 2013, and finished as runner-up at the 2013 Contest.
At the 2018 Contest in Lisbon, they competed in the first semi final but for the first time since their debut they failed to qualify for the final. They failed to qualify for the second time at the 2023 Contest in Liverpool.
The country debuted at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Amsterdam where they finished in 11th place. They bettered that result the following year by finishing in seventh place and did not compete in the next five Contests before returning for the 2018 Contest, achieving their worst result to date.
