Australia has participated in the Contest seven times, debuting in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna as an automatic qualifier for the 60th anniversary celebrations. Following their positive reception, it was decided that they should be allowed to participate full time and so far they have qualified for the final twice and achieved their best result at the 2016 Contest in Stockholm when their representative Dami Im finished as runner-up having won the televote.
Their 100% qualification streak continued until the 2021 Contest in Rotterdam saw it come to an end when their representative Montaigne failed to qualify from the first semi-final with her song "Technicolour".
It is the first country from the Oceania region (and the second country outside Eurasia, after Morocco in 1980) to participate in the Contest. It was originally decided that should they ever win, one of the 'Big Five' nations will host the Contest the following year. However, since then it has been revealed that if they win they will host the Contest in Europe.
